Tips on How to Avoid Costly Transmission Repair

How to Prolong the Life of a Manual Transmission?

For many drivers, a manual transmission isn’t going anywhere. However, if you want to avoid expensive trips to your transmission repair shop, then you had better continue reading my tips to prolong the life of your transmission.

Try not to downshift

Even though this is common practice, it does place unnecessary stress on your car. Over time, this will result in needing to visit a transmission shop earlier than is you would have preferred. So, what exactly is downshifting? This means switching to lower gears instead of using your brakes. Even though it does work, it should never be done on a regular basis. Yeah, you do save some wear on your brake pads, however, it is still cheaper to replace those than it would be to get a rebuild. It is a hard habit to break, but it is worth it in the end.

Stop riding the clutch

This isn’t a big problem for those who do most of their driving on the highway, most people commute to work in what is known as stop-and-go traffic, which can be taxing on a car. You will make it worse by riding the clutch. It is a common habit, as you need to keep shifting from one gear to the next, meaning your foot never quite releases the clutch. This will result in wearing it out long before its natural lifespan. Try to get into the habit of letting the clutch go all the way, even if you have to hover your foot over the pedal.

Practice good shifting

Pay more attention to how you are handling the shifting process. The fastest way to visit your nearest garage is to throw the car into reverse when you are still going forward. Try to avoid this at all costs, as it will mess things up really quickly. Never try to attempt “precision shifting” unless you are an expert at it. This is trying to shift without depressing the clutch.
